Maybe you should give it a shot….

We’ve all done quizzes and personality tests at some point of time, yes? I did an MBTI 6-7 months ago, and had a long discussion with my Organisational Behaviour teacher regarding this. There was a certain skewness in my MBTI profile that would work very well for me individually, but mess things up royally in groups. I’ve been trying to work on this skewness. Now, things have gotten even more skewed. While I’m very comfortable with the changes, I’m sure some people are not. *grin*

Allow me to illustrate with an example:

Three days ago, we had group presentations in class. The first group that presented did not do the assignment properly, and I got irritated. And bored. People who are mentally lazy irritate me sometimes, and even when they’re expected to give their own viewpoints, buggers end up stating facts that everyone knows. So, I asked a couple of questions. Same with the next two groups. When I returned to class midway through the break, I found that another group was presenting during the break, because of me. As I entered, they started fumbling. I took pity and kept my mouth shut. So, I’ve become more Thinking and Judging then I previously was, and the Feeling component has decreased. It has.*nods*

The self analysis has helped. I did a self-SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats), and listed out personal comfort and discomfort zones for me individually, as well as when I’m working in a group. What was really interesting is that several things that are comfort zones and strengths became weaknesses and discomfort zones in groups. So, you might feel very good about a particular personality trait that sets you apart from others, but when in a group, the same thing comes around and makes things difficult for you. Like my need for completion/closure. Or the need to take charge – If I’m in a group with another person who likes to take control of the situation, things are really uncomfortable for me.

I have to leave for college now. Not likely to have more than 30 minutes free time until 6:30. I’ll delve on this later. For now, I’m posting the results. Maybe you can do a test as well and tell me what your MBTI type is. What I have done is a self SWOT, so this test won’t give you that. You’ll have to do the soulsearching youself. Tagged, if you’re reading this O-)

Do the test here.

High anxiety, it seems, isn’t a bad thing. I’m also aware now, that because of the situation that I’ll soon be in, seeking work, I’m anxious. What’s happened is that stress has now been converted into eu-stress, which has spurred me into action. I’m channelising this stress to my advantage. Hence my prolonged absense from the blog world, and from chat. I need to make things happen, which is why I’ve become more image conscious, anxious, aggressive, helpful; a marked change from six months ago.

You must have heard of ‘The Zone’, a state where everything else blurs and you just do things as well as you had imagined them to go. That happened to me today. Very hectic, a situation that would usually have been very stressful. Instead, things just fell into place, perfectly. Two impromptu talks, group assignment done in a 15 min break, and two presentations. Phew!

I’ve also been informed that a few of you are doing the MBTI. Another thing that I did today was that I listed my strengths and weaknesses and analysed how they affect my behaviour in groups. For example, my strength is that I like to take control of situations and define the general direction of the effort. This strength becomes a discomfort zone in a group, when I’m faced with another person who has the same tendency. Now that I’m aware of it, I can thing of ways to handle this. As they say, knowledge is half the battle.

If you’re wondering about this recent “self analysis” mode that I’m in, it’s primarily because I’m doing four courses related to HR and behaviour. Marketing courses, sadly, ended last term. 🙁

“British medical researchers recently announced that contrary to conventional wisdom, brief periods of stress are healthy for us–so much so that they boost longevity and enhance our cells’ ability to repair themselves. At the same time, the scientists emphasized that intense, long-term stress is still just as bad for us as we’ve always thought. If they’re right, Capricorn, you should be the picture of vitality right now. The difficulties you’ve been facing lately have passed the Goldilocks’ test: neither too great nor too small, but just right.”

Interessin’. If you remember the percentages, lemme know. S and F components means that you’d be perfect in groups for resolving conflicts, I think. It also means that you’ll find yourself in the thick of things more often than not, and stay there. An ISFJ or and ISTP would probably have scooted ASAP. Why am I not surprised? 😀
